The Persecution of Christians Today The persecution of minority groups has been well documented throughout history. These documentations have been mostly of people of one race, culture, or ethnicity; persecuting another based on the belief that one race is superior to the other. In the case of Christianity, however, the documentation of the persecution has been kept to a minimum. In fact, it is rare to find a case in today’s world of the media reporting on the persecution of Christians. The reports of the atrocities of the Jews during the Holocaust where horrifying indeed, but equally horrifying are the accounts of the slaughter of Christians in the first century A.D. The church, being formed by Peter and other followers of Jesus Christ and his commands, came under the fire of persecution immediately upon its inception. John Fox’s Book of Martyrs tells us that the earliest persecution came under the rule of Nero in the year 67 A.D. Nero, the sixth emperor of Rome who reigned for five years, ordered that the city of Rome should be set on fire. Nero was quoted as saying in Fox’s book that â€Å"he wished the ruin of all things before his death.† After his conduct came under fire, he decided to cast the blame upon the Christians. He did this for two reasons: to excuse himself of the blame, and secondly to find new ways to impress his power by persecuting Christians. This was the first persecution of Christians. Christians become martyred for their beliefs. Nero contrived new ways of barbaric persecution to use on these early Christians. Instead of executing Christians in common ways, Nero found pleasure in devising twisted, morbid, and gruesome techniques for eliminating Christians. In one instance, Nero had Christians dressed in shirts made stiff with wax, then placed in his gardens and lit them on fire to illuminate the gardens.
